Evolution in a Nutshell
Evolution is defined as "the process by which different kinds of living organisms are thought to have developed and diversified from earlier forms during the history of the earth" by Google, but the meaning goes a little deeper than that. Creatures can develop, without diversification, and can diversify without developing. On example of development without diversification is in the adaptation of bacteria against antibiotics. A single cell develops to be resistant to a strain via mutation, and its within a few generations, every bacteria cell in the pool is now immune. This process is also known as survival of the fittest, stating that only the best adapted may survive. In diversification without development, in this, we see speciation. One example is the blue footed booby bird's blue feet. There is no actual benefit aside from being a symbol of health. It also shows that, a healthier mate, may produce healthier off spring. This is known as natural selection and non-random mating. An alternative to natural selection is artificial. The main difference being that an outside influence controls natural selection chooses, such as only allowing a certain kind of food, or a select size of egg hatch.
